Why is this helpful to someone who has had a concussion?

Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT) is a specialized form of physical therapy used to reduce/eliminate symptoms associated with a concussion. Our brain, inner ear, eyes and pressure sensors in our feet work together to allow us to maintain balance. A problem in any part of this system may cause vertigo (spinning), dizziness, nausea, imbalance, and visual changes. APRS Physical Therapy is unique in that we employ more Vestibular Therapists than anywhere in Montana.

Why is this helpful to someone who has had a concussion?

Hi my name is April Ildvad and I am a licensed clinical professional counselor in Montana. I am passionate about helping people learn to live with their new normal after they have sustained a concussion or a traumatic brain injury. I lived in Minnesota for the majority of my life and have been an active volunteer with the MN Brain Injury Alliance in many aspects including advocacy, events and outreach. I have advocated at the state Capitol for the past 9 years and have been apart of making changes in legislation which enabled people with brain injuries to live a better life. I also have volunteered at many events and have participated in outreach programs through the Alliance. Through my practice, I have been able to assist people who struggle with cognitive issues, memory problems and helped them develop healthy coping skills. I hope to be able to continue to work with people with concussion and brain injury here in Montana and look forward to being apart of this amazing community.

I have been apart of the concussion and brain injury community for the past 20 years and have treated clients with concussion and brain injury for the past 4 years. I also have been an advocate with the MN Brain Injury Alliance and am on the Montana Brain Injury Alliance's Board.

Why is this helpful to someone who has had a concussion?

As many of us know, suffering a mild brain injury can be very disruptive to daily life. While having difficulties thinking, we are asked to manage appointments, keep track of our activity level, and monitor our symptoms so it is not surprising that emotional consequences of concussions can be complex. Sometimes mood problems are related to the physical injury and other times our mood shifts as we try to navigate recovery. Often, it is both of these things. Add in the misinformation and premature conclusions about the long-term impact of concussions that are available on the internet, and we have a recipe for anxiety and depression. Unfortunately, psychologists, counselors, and other mental health providers are not immune to this misinformation and many of us are not well-versed in concussion which can cause unintentional problems in the healing process. As a result, it’s important that during your concussion recovery, you work with someone who can balance the importance of respecting the injury while maintaining hope for full recovery.
